Bryce Knowlen, RDO Equipment Co. on the Agriculture Technology Podcast

Bryce Knowlen, RDO Equipment Co. on the Agriculture Technology Podcast

When you work with agriculture equipment, one of the best ways to learn, see, and discover is to get up close and personal with the equipment itself. Or better yet, jump in the cab and head out to the field to see the machines in action.

That’s why host Tony Kramer invited Bryce Knowlen, Product Specialist with RDO Equipment Co. on a special edition of the podcast live from inside the John Deere 9620RX Tractor, as it pulled the John Deere 2730 Ripper. Tony and Bryce discussed both pieces of equipment and took an inside look – literally – at the new Command Center display inside the new tractors.

Here are a few of the highlights from the conversation. Listen to the full episode here.

TK
First off, we’d like to get to know you, a little bit about your background, and how you got started in the industry.

BK
Absolutely, Tony. I’ve been around the farm basically all my life. I started with RDO Equipment Co. four years ago in the parts department at Moorhead. In December of last year, I decided to become a Product Specialist and that’s what I’ve been doing since.

TK
Starting out, this equipment we’re in is the new John Deere 9RX, four-track machine. What is John Deere offering in terms of sizes, ability, and what we can do with this tractor?

BK
This is a very versatile piece of equipment. John Deere offers four sizes of this machine, from a 470-HP machine all the way up to the 620-HP machine that we’re in right now. The new Generation 4 CommandCenter is standard in all of them too.

TK
With this new Generation 4 CommandCenter, can we do things like Auto-Trac and Section Control?

BK
Yes, we can run Auto-Trac and Section Control, and we can also document things like our planter operations and air seeding applications. It’s a very versatile display and we’re going to see this in the future on all John Deere machines.

TK
Now let’s talk about this 2730 Combination Ripper behind us.

BK
John Deere came with this a couple years ago and it’s offered in four sizes: 14, 18, 22 and 26-foot. It was designed to get 26 disks on the front, and allows either gang configuration or individually mounted. Behind that, we have our ripper points, anywhere from 7 to 13 shanks, then behind that you have the leveling or closing disks. Behind that you can do a couple different options; first is a Coil Tine Harrow. Or you can do one of two different rolling baskets; either a Round Bar or Knife Edge.

TK
So rather than pulling a tandem disk and coming back with a chisel plow, it sounds like this is the type of tool you can use to get everything done in one pass.

BK
Yes, it’s a single-pass application. John Deere wanted to simplify and make a four-in-one option, and this is the machine to fit that bill.

TK
John Deere has been coming out with a lot of mobile apps, can you talk about the GoTill app?

BK
The GoTill app is designed for first-time customers of the Combination Ripper. The app shows you everything needed to get this product into the field, and also offers maintenance information and access to operator’s manuals. It’s a very good tool for everyone who has the 2730 Ripper.

TK
Finally, can you share any success stories you’ve had with customers, and the 2730 Ripper or 9RX tractor?

BK
I had the opportunity to demo this machine with the ripper, and a lot of customers commented on how smooth riding the tractor is and how much power to the ground it’s getting.

I’d say for our listeners, any chance you get to demo this, do it. It’s a great machine with great pulling capacity and power. We’ve heard great things from multiple customers.
