Terry Malingen, RDO Equipment Co., on the Agriculture Technology Podcast

RDO Equipment Co. is best known for its partnership with John Deere – but did you know it offers equipment from more than 150 additional manufacturer partner companies? Imagine what it’s like understanding such a variety of products, and managing partnerships with so many different companies. As RDO Shortlines Equipment Manager, that’s exactly what Terry Malingen does.

After featuring a variety of RDO Shortlines manufacturers on the podcast, host Tony Kramer invited Terry to discuss his role, working with the companies and some of the specialty products RDO Equipment Co. is able to offer thanks to these partnerships.

Here are a few of the highlights from the conversation. Listen to the full episode here.

TK
Let’s start out with hearing more about you and your background, and how you got involved in this industry.

TM
I started out with GPS Equipment as AMS product specialist for about 10 years. From there I took a job in shortlines as a product specialist, including helping to set up and work with salespeople. From there I worked as a regional sales manager, then when the opportunity arose, I came back to be the sales manager and work with equipment for all regions of our company.

TK
What is RDO Shortlines?

TM
RDO Shortlines is a compilation of our Ag equipment that is not John Deere. Everything from tillage to grain carts to augers falls under Shortlines. Most are products that John Deere does not make so different manufacturers that might make a niche product John Deere doesn’t.

TK
So how does that department operate, RDO Shortlines?

TM
Our department is here to bring organization to the process; and to make the products understandable for our salespeople and our company. With shortlines, we’re dealing with so many different companies and people, so we just try to bring organization to it.

TK
How many different companies are we dealing with?

TM
A lot. Approximately, to date, 150 to 200.

TK
Here at RDO we have three different regions: Midwest, Southwest, and Northwest. Do you want to touch briefly on some of the products offered in the Midwest region?

TM
In the Midwest, it’s dominated by grain carts, tillage, hay products, land rollers, augers, conveyors – it’s a lot of grain handling equipment.

TK
How about the Southwest? It’s a totally different animal down there, we’re dealing with different customers, crops, and processes so what do we have for RDO Shortlines?

TM
The Southwest is very interesting because it’s very regionalized. Every region might have the same crop but they do things differently from one to the next. We do deal with a lot of grapes, so Gregoire self-propelled grape harvesters is one we offer. We also deal with a lot of strawberries, vegetable crops, and lettuce is really big.

TK
Sounds like with all those different crops, it’s a lot of specialty equipment needed. Moving up to the Northwest, we have stores in Montana, Washington, and Oregon. What are some of the specialty equipment offerings we have there?

TM
We overlap a little bit in the Midwest and Northwest; they raise a lot of wheat and corn too, so grain handling equipment. Something that’s different is commercial hay. A lot gets shipped overseas and they have very strict standards on quality, so hay mergers are a big deal. A lot of feeders for cattle too. There are a lot of miscellaneous products that go with that, but they’re a big deal for our company. It’s important for us to take care of customers and find solutions.

With more than 150 manufacturers and dozens of products from each partner, one might think it would be a long process to get a piece of equipment not currently in stock at a local RDO Equipment Co. store. Terry explains how his team takes care of those customer needs quickly so please listen to the entire episode to learn more about that process.
