Since 2007, Matt Cancino has been proud to deliver that high level of service excellence to RDO Equipment Co. customers. He began his career as Service Technician at the Phoenix store. Two years later, Matt was offered a role as a Field Service Technician – an opportunity on which he eagerly jumped. Today, Matt works at the newest RDO Equipment Co. location in Chandler, where he has been part of the team since the store opened its doors last fall.
While Matt acknowledges, “There’s no ‘typical’ day in this line of work,” he was eager to take over the RDO Equipment Co. Instagram account to let our fans see the world through his eyes – what one day in the life of a Field Service Technician is really like.
Hi, I’m Matt, Field Service Technician in Chandler. I’ve worked at RDO Equipment Co. since 2007, and have been a Field Tech for nearly 8 years. Plain and simple – I love heavy equipment and I love what I do. While there’s no “typical” day in this line of work, I’m excited to take you along and show a glimpse of my job. Stay tuned – it’s going to be a great day!
First task in my day? Make sure my truck is ready to go. Every morning before I go out to a jobsite, I load parts and restock consumables like parts cleaner or bolts. I also check my tools to be sure I have what I need to do my job. Onboard I have everything from a screw compressor to a top-of-the-line welder. It’s important that I’m prepared for the day, especially when I might be on a job 100 miles from the store.
Being in Chandler, AZ we are located close to John Deere’s test site in Sacaton, so we occasionally work on special projects for John Deere. Today’s project? This 345G excavator. It was on display at CONEXPO/CON-AGG, and so far, I’ve split the tracks to remove the travel gears. I’ll rewrap the tracks and it’ll be all set. And after that – this unit is set to get a shorter arm.
One thing I enjoy about working at RDO Equipment Co. is that learning is a priority. I’ve reached capstone level certification with John Deere in almost every model – it’s taken me nearly 10 years, but being up to date on the latest machines is very important to me. And it helps me on all jobs, from the most complex to even the simplest. This excavator is set to run some specific tests for John Deere engineers and needed a smaller arm. My truck is equipped with a 10,000lb crane, so this will be an easy swap.
When I was young and studying to be a diesel tech, I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy working with my hands every day. And today, I enjoy my job because I’m helping solve problems. A big part of my job is diagnosing, and I enjoy figuring out why a machine is doing – or not doing – what it’s supposed to. At RDO Equipment Co., I’m part of a tight knit team. In Chandler, we have open communication, everyone helps everybody. It feels like a family atmosphere, which plays a huge role in my own family. I have two small boys and they LOVE equipment – when they can come have lunch with me and walk around the yard, they get to see what I do every day.
At the end of the day, Matt summarized his job by saying, “Plain and simple, I love heavy equipment, and I love what I do.”
He enjoyed giving RDO Equipment Co. customers, partners, and fans a glimpse into his day, and hopes you enjoyed seeing a day in his life as a field service technician.
