Overview of John Deere Work Planner

Overview of John Deere Work Planner

31 Jul 2025 Author: Scott Schumacher Read time: 3 min

Coordinating fieldwork across multiple machines and operators can quickly get complicated. John Deere’s Work Planner helps simplify the process by letting you organize jobs ahead of time and send them directly to your equipment so everything’s ready when it’s time to hit the field.

Work Planner brings more structure and simplicity to your fieldwork. This guide overviews what Work Planner is, how it works and how it fits into your operation.

What is Work Planner?

Work Planner is a feature within the John Deere Operations Center that allows you to create, modify and send work plans directly to your equipment. This tool helps ensure that tasks are completed accurately and on time by cutting down on in-cab setup time, streamlining communication and minimizing the risk of errors in the field.

What You Need to Get Started

To use Work Planner effectively, you’ll need a few key pieces in place:

  • John Deere Operations Center account: This is where you’ll create, manage and send your work plans.

  • Compatible display: A Gen 4 or G5 display is required to receive and run work plans in the cab

  • Connected equipment: Machines need to be connected to JDLink™ to receive plans wirelessly. If your equipment isn’t connected, you can still transfer plans manually using a USB drive

Benefits of Using Work Planner

  1. Saves time: Create and send work plans to your connected machines, wirelessly and instantly.

  2. More accurate: Boundary-triggered plans reduce mistakes, even with operators who aren’t familiar with the field.

  3. Greater flexibility: Manage your operations from anywhere using the mobile version of Work Planner in the Operations Center mobile app.

  4. Documented work: Automatically log when, where and how work is done, powered by accurate machine and field data.

  5. Smarter guidance with AutoPath™: Now compatible with Work Planner, AutoPath uses planting or strip-till data to automatically generate full-field guidance lines for secondary operations like fertilizing and harvesting. These lines are integrated with your Work Planner setup, ensuring consistent, accurate passes all season long.

Note: To use AutoPath, you'll need Automation 4.0 on a compatible display, SF3 or RTK accuracy, and Gen OS 24 1 or newer for supported windrowers.

Step-by-Step: Getting Started with Work Planner

  1. Access Work Planner

To begin, log in to your John Deere Operations Center account, either on the web or mobile app. Head to the “Plan” tab to launch Work Planner.

  2. Create a Work Plan

  • Select the field(s)
  • Define the operation type (e.g., planting, spraying, tillage, harvesting)
  • Choose equipment, implements, operators and presets like crop, prescriptions or rates
  • Optionally include boundaries, variety locator maps and guidance lines
  1. Send to Equipment

Once your plan is complete, send it wirelessly to your compatible display. Your connected equipment will automatically receive the plan and prompt the operator to accept it when they enter the field.

  2. Monitor and Adjust

Use the Operations Center mobile app to track the progress of your work plans in real-time — view acres covered, machine status, yield data and more. If any changes are needed, you can modify the plans and resend them to your equipment.

Tips for Getting the Most from Work Planner

  • Prioritize tasks so operators see what matters most first

  • Keep display software up to date to enable functionality like automatic imports and AutoPath

  • Use variety locator maps — they can auto-populate during harvest setup

  • Combine guidance, prescriptions and equipment mapping into a single plan for smoother execution

  • Train operators on accepting plans from the display for faster transitions in the cab
