Job Site Story Highlights Technology and Labor Challenges (November 2024)

To build a strong home, you need a solid foundation. And you need a solid, experienced team to prepare the ground before building. That’s where teams like Hamett Excavation are essential. Earlier this year, Hammett’s Vice President Darin Stroud discussed how the Hammett team integrated GPS technology and machine control into their fleet. The company’s decision to adopt these new technologies proved to be a defining moment for the whole team in that it catalyzed the team’s proficiency to complete projects, even while dealing with a challenging skilled labor market.

Stroud explained they started using GPS technology on their excavator fleet more than 20 years ago when RDO Equipment Co. team members encouraged Harry Hammett, the company's founder, to try something new.

“Harry was one of the first ones to demo the GPS technology on his dozer,” Stroud said. “Once he saw how the GPS and machine control systems displayed how deep to cut in real-time, he told the RDO technicians to leave it on the machine.”

Reflecting on Construction Trends, Envisioning the Future (January 2024)

Most of us take the time to reflect on the past year while making plans for the year ahead. For those of us in the construction industry, last year was filled with highs and lows. It started the year with inflation on the rise, exceeding levels we hadn’t seen in decades. Inflation, combined with volatility in material prices and increased labor costs, meant that we had to remain flexible. Higher interest rates began to impact the construction industry, particularly toward the end of last year, with housing starts slowing down and new buildings hitting a three-year low. Many of those trends aren’t yet in contractors’ rearview mirror but will likely continue in the view ahead.

Eliminate Rework Through Equipment and Technology (April 2024)

Roadbuilders, like many others in the construction world, are weathering changes as we all near the halfway point of an election year. Project managers employ solutions to increase profit margins during this paving season, despite increased material and labor costs. In Dennis Howard’s latest article in the print issue of “Equipment Today” he explains the number one practice roadbuilders are focusing on the upcoming paving season: elimination of rework.
