What is the John Deere 1023E Sub-Compact Utility Tractor? 

The 1023E is John Deere’s smallest sub-compact utility tractor and the first in its compact tractor lineup. John Deere’s model numbering system uses the last two digits to indicate horsepower—so the 1023E delivers 23 horsepower.

The 1023E is the most economical compact tractor John Deere offers. If you need a capable machine for property tasks, this model could be the perfect fit. 

What is the John Deere 1025R Sub-Compact Utility Tractor? 

The 1025R is one of John Deere’s most popular sub-compact models, second only to the 2025R. It delivers 25 horsepower and includes several premium features.

John Deere designed the R Series as the premium tier in each lineup. The 1025R includes options like a cab, adjustable steering wheel, toolbox and more. 

John Deere 1025R vs. 1023E Key Differences 

Both tractors can meet your needs if you don’t require more than 25 horsepower. However, the 1025R’s added PTO power, comfort features and performance have made it more popular — we’ve sold about 7.5 times more 1025Rs than 1023Es since 2020. 

Horsepower affects how well a tractor handles heavy loads and high-RPM tasks. 

• 1023E: 23 hp (16.2 PTO) 
• 1025R: 25 hp (18.2 PTO) 

That extra power helps with demanding jobs like hauling, brush cutting or snow blowing. For light mowing or occasional hauling, the 1023E may be enough. But if you expect frequent or intensive tasks, the 1025R offers more muscle. 

For example, if you plan to use your tractor for operating a heavy-duty rotary cutter or handling a front-loader packed with gravel, the additional horsepower of the 1025R will let you work more efficiently and tackle steeper terrain without bogging down.  

More horsepower means you can attach larger implements, maintain higher speeds under load and complete demanding jobs like snow blowing deep drifts or tilling compacted soil with less strain on the engine and a smoother operator experience. 

These features aren’t essential for basic property work. If comfort and convenience aren’t priorities, the 1023E still delivers solid performance. 

Difference 3) Price 

Price is a big question in your mind. As it should be — this is an investment.  

Between these two models, the 1023E will be your less expensive option. The 1025R is the more premium model (as evidenced by its features and horsepower), demanding a higher price tag.  

For some context, over the last five years, the average new 1025R we’ve sold has cost the customer roughly $20,200. Alternatively, the average price of a new 1023E has been around $15,600.  

You can expect to pay around $5,000 more if you opt for the 1025R. However, both are capable machines. For an investment that can truly last decades, this might be worth it.   

Who is a Good Fit for the John Deere 1023E? 

Although it can be considered an entry-level compact utility tractor, the 1023E is a versatile, reliable machine created with consideration for the needs of residential property owners. 

When considering fit, we commonly recommend a 1023E if you have a small(er) 1-5 acre property with light/medium maintenance needs.  

If you are budget-conscious and need a handy little chore tractor that you can maneuver in tight areas for mowing, snow removal, garden/tree tilling, etc., this is your solution.  

Looking into some data, over the last five years, the vast majority of our 1023E sales have been to individuals, although a few have been to lawn and land companies.  

Who is a Good Fit for the John Deere 1025R? 

The 1025R, like we mentioned above, is one of John Deere’s most popular compact utility tractor models — we sell them more than any other model. 

There’s a reason it’s so widely adopted. A 1025R can handle the vast majority of any residential buyer’s landscaping, gardening and property maintenance needs.  

The punch it packs into its small frame, with 25 horsepower and the convenience of having a cab option, are among its top selling points.  

Again, this is a good solution if you have 1-5 acres of property to maintain through mowing, cutting brush, tilling dirt, blowing snow and moving heavy loads.  

We also sell quite a few of these to large farms and ranches that need a convenient piece of equipment to maneuver in tight spaces.

Commercial snow removal companies also prefer these to the 1023E. Its small frame is perfect for most sidewalk jobs, and its heated cab keeps you warm all winter.  

If you fit these qualities, are looking for a premium option with all kinds of great features and aren’t as concerned with spending a bit more, go with the 1025R.
