John Deere 1E 23, 1M 25 and 1R 25 Compact Utility Tractors: An Overview

John Deere 1E 23, 1M 25 and 1R 25 Compact Utility Tractors: An Overview

30 Oct 2026 Author: Todd Tescher

Owning a few acres comes with plenty of possibilities. It also comes with a never-ending to-do list of projects.

The list can include grass to mow, gravel to move, landscaping to maintain, postholes to dig, livestock pens to clean, and, depending on where you live, snow to clear. And that’s just the start. What begins as a few weekend chores can quickly become a full schedule of property maintenance.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have one machine that could handle that work?

That’s where the John Deere 1 Series compact utility tractors (CUTs) come in. Designed to deliver versatility in a compact package, these tractors can help homeowners, acreage owners and hobby farmers tackle a wide range of projects without investing in multiple pieces of equipment.

The new 1E 23, 1M 25 and 1R 25 offer updated operator comfort, convenience and functionality features, leaving you even more to consider when choosing a 1 Series CUT.

What Can the New 1 Series Compact Tractors Do?

John Deere’s new CUTs can do so much more than mow the lawn.

With the right attachments, they’ll help property owners manage projects every season.

  • Spring: Move mulch, haul landscaping materials, prepare garden areas and clean up winter debris.
  • Summer: Maintain lawns, transport materials and tackle landscaping projects.
  • Fall: Move dirt or gravel, maintain driveways, and prepare outdoor spaces for the colder months.
  • Winter: Move things to storage, clear snow and feed livestock.

The ability to switch between jobs is a major advantage for property owners who want to accomplish more with one machine. Updates to the 1 Series will help you even do more.

What’s New with John Deere’s 1 Series Compact Tractors?

In 2026, John Deere started rolling out an update to its most popular sub-compact tractor series. Previously offering two models, the 1023E and 1025R, the 1 Series now consists of three, the 1E 23, 1M 25 and 1R 25.

These three new models offer updates that emphasize the operator’s experience, including comfort, convenience and easier access to the features/attachments used during every day, year-round work.

Comfort Updates to the 1 Series

Whether you’re mowing for an afternoon or clearing snow after a winter storm, operator comfort matters.

John Deere has made updates to the operator station, designed to make each model in the series more comfortable and convenient to use. Changes to seating, controls and available cab configurations help you stay focused on the job rather than the machine.

John Deere 1E 23 Operator Comfort Feature Updates

  • High-back suspension seat
  • Durable marine-grade vinyl seat
  • Seat armrests for added support

John Deere 1M 25 Operator Comfort Feature Updates

  • Optional factory-installed all-weather HVAC cab with heat and air conditioning
  • Redesigned fender console
  • Standard tilt steering wheel

For property and business owners who use their tractors throughout the year, these comfort feature upgrades can be especially important.

Task Convenience and Attachment Updates to the John Deere 1 Series

Versatility is one of the biggest advantages of owning a CUT. But that versatility depends on being able to use the right attachments for the job. John Deere’s new 1 Series models built on the attachment versatility offered in the previous generation.

John Deere offers compatible equipment for mowing, loader work, snow removal, and other property maintenance tasks.

Depending on the tractor model and attachment, features such as drive-over mower deck systems (AutoConnect™) and quick-attach loader connections (Quik-Park™) can help simplify the transition from one project to another.

Updated access to hydraulic connections, like factory-installed front third-function hydraulics on the 1R and 1M, and operator controls will make everyday operation more convenient.

Usability and Instrumentation Updates to the John Deere 1 Series

Lighting, instrumentation, visibility and ease of access are all worth considering when comparing tractors. John Deere also thought about this in its new models.

The latest 1 Series offerings include operator-focused improvements intended to make the machine easier to use and better suited to a variety of working conditions.

Is a 1 Series Tractor Right for Your Property?

One of the first questions customers ask when shopping for a compact utility tractor is whether it will be large enough for their needs.

The answer depends on more than acreage.

John Deere’s 1 Series tractors are particularly well-suited for smaller properties where maneuverability, versatility and everyday maintenance are priorities. They can be an appealing option for homeowners transitioning from a riding lawn tractor who want the ability to do more than mow.

But two properties of the same size can have vastly different equipment needs.

A homeowner maintaining several acres of open lawn may have different priorities than someone with a long gravel driveway, wooded areas, livestock, or frequent material-handling projects.

Before choosing a tractor in the one series, consider these questions:

  • How much property do you maintain, and what type of terrain does it have?
  • Will mowing be the primary job, or do you also need a loader and other attachments?
  • How much snow do you typically need to remove?
  • Are there gates, buildings, or other tight spaces to navigate?
  • What projects might you want to tackle in the future?

Thinking beyond today’s to-do list can help you select equipment that continues to meet your needs as your property and projects evolve.

Should You Go with John Deere’s 2 Series Instead?

For some property and business owners, a 1 Series tractor offers the right combination of capability and maneuverability. Others may benefit from stepping up to a John Deere 2 Series.

Larger tractors can provide additional capacity for certain applications, including more demanding loader work and heavier projects. However, a more compact machine may be easier to maneuver around landscaping, buildings, and confined spaces.

The best choice comes down to how you intend to use the tractor.

If your priorities include mowing, routine property maintenance, snow removal, and occasional loader work, a 1 Series may be the right fit.

If your projects regularly require greater lifting capacity or more demanding work, it may be worth exploring the 2 Series.
