OEM vs Aftermarket Equipment Parts: Which Should You Choose?

OEM vs Aftermarket Equipment Parts: Which Should You Choose?

23 Sep 2025 Author: Brian Lohse Read time: 3 min

When it’s time to replace an equipment part, you’ll often face a decision: OEM or aftermarket? Considering their differences allows you to make the best choice for your machine and operation.

OEM Parts

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are made by your machine’s original manufacturer, such as John Deere, Vermeer and other trusted brands. They are built to meet the same specifications and performance standards as the original components.

Why customers choose OEM:

  • Reliable performance: OEM parts fit and function exactly like the original, reducing the risk of unexpected failures
  • Warranty and support: Many OEM parts are covered by the manufacturer’s and RDO’s Parts and Service Promise, giving you options for returns and repairs
  • Peace of mind: OEM parts are often the preferred choice for essential or high-value equipment, especially when long-term reliability matters

While OEM parts can be priced higher than aftermarket alternatives, many customers find the reliability and support worth the investment.

Aftermarket Parts

Aftermarket parts are made by third-party suppliers and manufacturer-owned brands like John Deere’s A&I. They offer a more cost-effective way to keep your equipment running.

Why customers choose aftermarket:

  • Lower upfront cost: Aftermarket options can be less expensive than OEM
  • Practical for seasonal or older equipment: If your goal is to keep a machine running through a busy season, aftermarket can be a sensible option
  • Manufacturer-backed options: Certain aftermarket lines, like A&I, are owned by equipment manufacturers and can meet quality standards comparable to OEM parts

Keep in mind, quality can vary with aftermarket parts. Generic options may not always match OEM compatibility or durability, so it’s important to choose carefully. RDO’s parts specialists can help you find options that balance cost and quality for your equipment.

Choosing the Right Part for Your Operation

Every operation is different. When deciding between OEM and aftermarket parts, consider factors like:

  • How critical the machine is: For essential or high-value equipment, OEM parts are the safer choice. For older machines or secondary units, aftermarket options may be more practical
  • Budget priorities: If cost savings are a priority, aftermarket can help manage expenses while keeping machines functional
  • Warranty and resale plans: OEM parts help maintain warranty coverage and can support higher resale value
  • Timing and availability: RDO’s inventory network makes it possible to source both OEM and aftermarket parts quickly to minimize downtime

RDO’s parts specialists are here to help you weigh these factors and present the options available, so you can choose what fits best.
